About Me & What I Teach

This is my 10th year teaching and advising at Edwardsville High School. I'm passionate about reading and writing, and I see tremendous value in the skill sets that journalism and working on publications afford students. Further, I believe being a discerning news consumer is crucial.

In addition to Journalism 1 and AJC, I will be teaching Honors World Literature again this year.

When students come to my classroom every day, they can expect to be challenged by my high expectations, learn to evaluate what they read with a critical eye, and contribute to lively discussions where their points of view are valued.

Honors World Literature

World Literature is EHS's required English course for sophomore students. Honors World Literature is geared toward talented readers and writers and is taught at a quicker pace than the average-level course. Students will read representative literature from numerous world cultures, and within those, pieces from various time periods.

During second semester, students will write an argumentative research paper, which is a required component of the course.

Journalism 1

Journalism 1 is the first course in the two-course journalism strand at EHS. During the year, students will learn all aspects of journalistic composition as well as the foundations of news literacy and media law & ethics. Students will learn to write news stories, features, and opinion pieces. An extended research project is a required component of the class.

Advanced Journalistic Composition

Advanced Journalistic Composition (AJC) is the second course in the journalism strand. This honors-level course requires that students write regularly for EHS's online newspaper, Tiger Times Online, as well as the quarterly print publication, The Claw.

Students will continue to work on all skills acquired in Journalism 1, with increased emphasis on quality of writing and regular reading/analysis of professional pieces.
